Advancing Learning Systems for Health in the Asia-Pacific Region through Health Policy and Systems Research

Health systems across the Asia Pacific region are diverse, yet they face common challenges in achieving universal health coverage (UHC). Health policy and systems research (HPSR) is an underutilized tool that can support the organization of health resources—human, financial and material—and drive health system transformation. Strengthening and connecting existing networks of policymakers, researchers and development partners is essential to ensure that policies and evidence are timely, relevant and effectively integrated.

APO will moderate a discussion on the impact of HPSR in the Asia Pacific, exploring strategies to build HPSR capacity and highlighting the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing to enhance resilience within health systems across the region.

Panelists:

  • Dr Nima Asgari | Director, Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies
  • Dr Sarah Barber | WHO Kobe Centre for Health Development
  • Assoc Prof Tang Kun | Tsinghua University, China
  • Assoc Prof Karen Grepin | University of Hong Kong

November 19 - PHC Satellite Session (SS-104)

8:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Research that Should Matter at the Primary Health Care Level: Linking Demand and Supply in Asia Pacific

Primary Health Care (PHC) is the foundation of UHC, yet evidence-based policy in this area is often overlooked and underused. APO will host a dedicated session on PHC where panelists will introduce work by APO, WHO and partners to map the research-to-policy landscape in the region and propose future policy-informed research directions. Panelists will discuss bridging gaps in PHC research to better align with policy needs, emphasizing collaboration, stakeholder engagement and evidence-informed decision-making.

Panelists:

  • Dr Nima Asgari | Director, Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies
  • Dr Devaki Nambiar | George Institute for Global Health
  • Dr Jasper Tromp | National University of Singapore, Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health
  • Dr Mario Villaverde | Ateneo School of Government
  • Prof Lijing Yan | Duke Kunshan University
  • Dr Piya Hanvoravongchai | Thailand National Health Foundation
  • Mr Dhillon Ibadat | WHO South-East Asia Region
  • Dr Masahiro Zakoji | WHO Western Pacific Region

These sessions provide a unique opportunity to engage with policymakers, researchers and health practitioners working to advance health policy and systems research in the Asia Pacific region.
